Onions are exported to various countries in the world from Nashik, Maharashtra.
Harvested onions are stored in cold storage tanks for export and domestic sale as and when required.
About 25 percent of onions spoil after harvest even when stored in cold storage.
It has been found that post-harvest damage is reduced from 25% to 10% when subjected to gamma radiation.
In the first phase, 400 metric tons of onions were put on trial basis in Nashik.
This practice can be extended across the country soon as it gives good results to the farmers and traders.
