Although India is an agricultural country, the production of some agricultural products is not self-sufficient.
An important ingredient in it is pulses.
India is a major importer of pulses other than Chenna.
Especially Tur dal and Urud dal, we import from many countries.
The pulses sold through ration shops in India are mostly imported from countries like Canada and Australia.
Such imported pulses are cheaper than pulses grown in India.
At present, the central government has allowed duty-free import of the above two pulses from three countries.
A maximum of 0.6 million tonnes should be imported from three countries only.
Those countries are Myanmar, Mozambique and Malawi.
Such imported goods should be imported through five ports only.
The ports are Thoothukudi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hazira.
Certificate of Origin is mandatory to get this import duty exemption.
