Cochin Port, which is important for export and import.
The depth of the port is very, very important in maritime transport.
It is true that there is no facility for large ships to come and go in any port in India.
Cargo from small ships here will be transferred to larger ships at the Port of Colombo and from there voyage starts to the United States and Europe.
Currently the Colombo port is very congested.
There is even a situation where some ships are waiting on a weekly basis.
Delays are inevitable despite various measures taken by the Colombo Port Authority to deal with the traffic congestion.
Realizing this, the Government of India is currently in the process of deepening the port of Cochin as a first step.
At present the depth of Cochin port is 14.5 meters.
The Government of India has decided to deepen it to 18 meters.
This will enable large ships to be brought in and docked at Cochin port.
Due to this the traffic of slightly larger ships is increased in the port of Cochin.
Not only this, the land handling containers in the port is two million TEU (20 feet equivalent unit). The government has announced that it will expand to three million. Currently only 40% of this land area is used.
This will be very useful for handling bulk containers after the deepening work is completed.
