Rice is imported from India to various countries.
One of the most important of them is Bangladesh.
Demand for non-basmati rice has increased in Bangladesh.
The Government of Bangladesh has decided to import 3 lakh tonnes of rice from India.
Of this, 1.5 lakh tonnes of rice is imported directly from the Government of India by the Government of Bangladesh.
The remaining 1.5 lakh tonnes are being bought by importers in Bangladesh from local exporters.
Bangladesh has decided to import all these purchases by October 30.
Therefore, a relaxation has been announced from the rice import tax till October 30.
So far the 25 per cent import tax has been reduced to 15 per cent.
The Bangladeshi government has advised that the relaxation will last until October 30.
This will greatly benefit states like West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
Most of the rice exports to Bangladesh are from the above states.
