India and Pakistan have been exporting basmati rice to federations in different countries for the last 40 years.
India is the largest exporter of rice and Pakistan is the fourth largest exporter.
India applied GI TAG for basmati rice last year.
Upon learning of this, Pakistan vehemently opposed the petition.
The country applied for the GI TAG of the basmati rice as belonging to Pakistan.
The GI TAG issuing authority said India and Pakistan should talk and make a decision.
It said the decision should be made by September 2021.
