Sad Story of Turmeric Export

Global demand for turmeric is high. Realizing this, the farmers brought a large quantity of turmeric to the Erode market.

That's where the biggest shock awaited them.

It was then revealed that the Sri Lankan government had banned the import of turmeric.

About 7,000 tons of turmeric are exported to Sri Lanka from Erode every year.

Farmers and traders were stunned by the sudden halt in turmeric imports.

Similarly, farmers from Maharashtra, who felt the need for turmeric, planted more turmeric and brought it to the Maharashtra market.

The resulting turmeric is still widely exported to the United States, Europe and the Gulf.

The exporters in Erode did not export much to any country other than Sri Lanka, so the bulk of the arriving turmeric remained.

But at the same time, exporters from Maharashtra exported turmeric in association with importers from different parts of the world, thus increasing the purchase of turmeric from 5 per cent to 30 per cent a year.

There are many private and government cold storages in Maharashtra. Turmeric is processed there and is still exported today.

There are no such cold storages in Erode so farmers and traders have no choice but to watch the yellow spoil before their eyes.
