Fishing is the main business in Nagapattinam district. From here a large number of fish are exported daily not only to Tamil Nadu but also to other states and districts. As a result, crores of rupees are being traded daily. Farm shrimp production is also taking place. Farm shrimp production takes place in coastal areas, estuaries and estuaries. There are shrimp farms in Nagai district from Kollidam to Kodiakkara on about 2 thousand hectares. It produces about 20,000 tons of shrimp per year.
More than 5,000 people directly and indirectly depend on the industry. Shrimp is exported from Nagai District to various countries including Japan, USA, Europe. Shrimp production was paralyzed as domestic and international transport was disrupted due to the corona curfew. As a result, the Nagai District Shrimp Farms could not get orders from abroad and the producers could not export. So the producers were selling the shrimp in the local markets at low prices and incurring losses. Now that the curfew has been relaxed, shrimp exports to the outposts are starting to weed out.

Papago, near Nagai, has a large number of shrimp farms in areas including Gramathumedu, Chinnathumpur, Cheruthur and Thirupaundi. Vanami prawns are widely produced here. For prawns, up to Rs 7 lakh is spent on maintenance needs including fodder, medicine, electricity and labor. Raised for 90 to 120 days, these Vanami prawns are available up to 4 tons per acre. Small prawns were exported at Rs.240 to Rs.280 per kg and large prawns at Rs.450 to Rs.500 per kg. In this case, due to the corona curfew, foreign exports were completely paralyzed.
Thus we have been selling prawns at low prices in the local markets. This caused us a huge loss. Shrimp production was also affected. We are currently exporting prawns to inland destinations including Kerala, Bangalore and Marathaland as the curfew has been gradually relaxed and traffic has resumed. At present a kilo of shrimp is sold for Rs.280. Thus shrimp production is back to normal. Thus he said.
